ANNOUNCEMENT!! : I will be running 4 seasonal field courses in 2019 (spring, summer, fall, winter). Exact dates and tuition has not been decided on yet. The field course consists of a week long survival trip held in a remote backcountry setting only a few hours from Santa Cruz CA. Due to the demanding nature of survival living, I only allow 6 students per course. If your interested please contact me for an application! Financial Aid is available for those who are in need. In order to get the most from this trip you will need a valid CA hunting license.

What I Teach

I have spent the last 20 years honing the skills needed to live a hunter-gatherer lifestyle, much of what I have learned came from living in nature and relying upon my skills to keep me alive. I come from a very pure primitive skills/hunter gatherer background, although I have been a licensed hunting and fishing guide for half a decade. I believe that dependance on any modern tools (for survival) mean your skills and connection to the land need work. Building a strong foundation without modern gear will ultimately force you to to use your knowledge of the land to  move with it rather than against it. I can teach a wide variety of skills, some are listed below.

  • Basic "primitive" survival (shelter, water, fire, food)

  • Basic Modern or "Kit survival", building and using a survival kit as well as improvising with found materials

  • Primitive & contemporary fire making & ignition methods ( bowdrill, firesaw, fire plow, hand drill, ferro rods, fresnel lens, chemical ignition methods and many others)

  • Primitive & minimalist trapping

  • Bow & Arrow making

  • Stone tools/ Flintknapping (Beginner to Advanced)

  • Primitive weapons (atlatl, sling, throwing stick, spear ect)

  • Wild edible & utilitarian plants, shrubs and trees of the pacific coast.

  • Tracking

  • Nature Awareness & Bird language

  • Honoring the kill/Animal processing & utilization (harvesting and using the sinew, bone, organs ect)

  • Hide tanning (Wet Scrape, brain tan), Parflech (rawhide containers)
